Man kills mother over property

Pune: A 43-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing his 70-year-old mother after she refused to register flats in his name. The incident took place in the wee hours of Thursday in Erandwane.

The deceased has been identified as Aruna Manohar Sapkal, a resident of Ganeshnagar in Erandwane. Based on a complaint from PSI Pankaj Shingare, an FIR has been registered with the Alankar police station against her son Anand Manohar Sapkal.

According to the police, Aruna’s two daughters are married. Anand is unmarried and unemployed. He lived with his mother in Ganeshnagar Ota Vasahat. A builder had developed a society on their land and they had got three one room kitchen flats.

They lived in one flat while the remaining two were given out on rent, from which they sustained their livelihood.

Police officials said that for the last few months, Anand had been quarrelling with his mother and telling her not to give property to his sisters and give it to him instead. He had also assaulted his mother on this issue in the past.

On Thursday morning, he told neighbours that his mother has not woken up. Later, he went to the police with the same complaint. The cops registered a case of accidental death (AD) and sent the body for a post-mortem to Sassoon Hospital.

However, rumours were rife in the neighbourhood that he had killed his mother.

SPI Rekha Salunke, in-charge of Alankar police station, said, “We got a report stating the elderly woman died because she was hit on her stomach and chest. Therefore, we registered a case of murder against her son on Thursday night and arrested him.” PI (Crime) Vijay Shinde is further investigating the case.
