Man held for duping Sr citizen of Rs 55 lakh

PUNE: Officials of the Cyber Crime Cell (CCC) of the city police crime branch on Thursday arrested a man involved cheating a senior citizen of Rs 54.8 lakh in last six years. The arrested accused has been identified as Javed Jalaluddin Shaikh from Ghatkopar in Mumbai.

As per information given by officials, the 66-year-old victim from Pashan, had received a phone call in 2012 from an unidentified person who informed the victim that his insurance policy is lapsing and if he wants to claim his insurance money, he will have to buy other policies. The victim did as instructed. Later, the accused told the victim that a cheque of Rs 18 lakh will be handed over to the victim and he asked the victim to pay some amount to claim the sum. The accused kept on cheating the victim and cheated him of Rs 55 lakh in last six years.

Police officials started the investigation of the case recently and found that the bank account in which the money was transferred by the victim was used by Shaikh. The police later found that Shaikh had been arrested by Dharavi police in another cheating case. He was produced in the Shivajinagar court and was sent to one day police custody.

The case was investigated by Police Inspector Radhika Phadke, Assistant Police Inspector Vaishali Totewar and policemen Aslam Attar, Vikas Ovhal, Shirish Gavde, Nitin Chandane and Santosh Jadhav.
