Man duped by woman he met on matrimonial site

Pune: A 36-year-old man has been duped of Rs 2 lakh by a woman whom he met on a matrimonial site. The fraudster took the money by citing the reason that her father has suffered a heart attack. A case was registered at Sangvi police station on Tuesday.

The accused was identified as Kavya Asolkar, a native of Nagpur who met complainant Mahesh Patil, a resident of Juni Sangvi on a matrimonial site ‘Jeevansathi’. The complainant was duped by the accused within a period of one month. Arvind Jondhale, Police Inspector (Crime), said, “The complainant registered himself on the matrimonial site in September. A week later, he received messages on his profile stating that Asolkar is interested in him. Gradually, the complainant started talking to her and shared his number with the accused woman. They used to communicate on regular basis and within a period of one month, the woman managed to win the confidence of the complainant. She trapped him with her sweet talk and then told him that her father has suffered a heart attack and she requires money for his treatment.”

Jondhale said that the complainant got influenced by the woman and then transferred the amount of around Rs 2 lakh in her account. However, since October 23, she stopped taking his calls and stopped all communication with the complainant.

“The complainant tried to contact the woman repeatedly, but she didn’t respond. Later, he approached us and filed a complaint against her. We have started our investigation and will catch the culprit soon,” added Jondhale.

The Sangvi police have registered a case under section  419 (Punishment for cheating by personation) 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and IT act.
