MahaMetro transplants as many as 430 trees

Pune: In yet another environment-friendly initiative, officials of MahaMetro have successfully replanted 24 trees in Kasarwadi area of Pimpri-Chinchwad. Till now, MahaMetro has replanted 430 trees in a similar way.

Officials of MahaMetro said that the trees had to be shifted for the ongoing work of metro at Nashik Phata on the Pimpri-Swargate corridor of metro. The trees were around 3.5 m in diameter and 7 feet underground, aged between 35 to 40 years of age. The trees were lifted with cranes and JCB machines. Officials of MahaMetro said that they are doing their level best to conserve the environment.

While the authorities are replanting existing trees, they are also carrying out drives to plant new trees. This year, the MahaMetro has planted 1,000 trees on Taljai hills and has kept a target of planting of 4000 trees. The hill was chosen as Taljai is one of the popular spots for morning walks. To track the development of these trees, officials have numbered the trees.

“To conserve the environment, we will continue to plant more trees. We have also tied up with Aundh ITI for planting more trees,” added an official of MahaMetro.

While the MahaMetro officials stated that maximum care would be taken to avoid any tree cutting and so they are replanting the trees, experts are worried about the loss of habitat and impact on biodiversity due to shifting of the trees.
