MahaMetro to start rolling stock plant in Nagpur soon

Pune: To promote ‘Make in India’, MahaMetro has decided to have its own plant of rolling stock which will be set up in Nagpur, informed MahaMetro Managing Director Brijesh Dixit. He was in the city to inaugurate the event of planting 1,000 saplings on World Environment Day in Aundh Industrial Training Institute.

Speaking on the prospective of getting the rolling stock from China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC), Dixit said that earlier they had kept CRRC as an option as it was the lowest bidder but now as per directions from the State government, MahaMetro is mulling to start the plant of indigenous rolling stock in Nagpur. “It will take us three months to prepare the detail project report (DPR) and will take about Rs 300 crore as we have planned an asset-light model approach for the initiative. In asset-light model, the basic body will be prepared by us and the required machinery part for the coaches will be assembled from other providers,” added Dixit.

Dixit further said, “As per the rulings of metro, cities with over 20 lakh population should have metro facility and so India will have a large requirement of coaches. Once the facility is built in Nagpur, it can cater to metro projects of other cities,” added Dixit.

As per Mahametro, the PCMC-Swargate corridor of metro will require 88 coaches and Vanaz-Ramawadi corridor will require 40 coaches in the first phase.
