Low-lying suburban areas are worst-hit

Pune: The rain fury on Wednesday-Thursday night badly affected many low-lying areas in Sahakar Nagar, Parvati, Sinhagad Road, Dandekar Bridge and Padmavati.

Six persons were killed when a wall collapsed in Tangewala Colony in Gangatirth Society in Aranyeshwar area of Sahakar Nagar. Almost 150 houses were damaged.

“This happened due to sudden flow of water from upstream with full force. The compound wall collapsed on the road going towards these houses while four people were trying to escape the water flow. Two bodies were recovered downstream,” an official said.

Many cattle of Shree Dugdhalay Dairy farms in Sahakar Nagar were washed away. “The water was so fast we could not rescue the cattle,” said Amit Aurange, dairy owner.

Kishor Girme (52), a contractor who lived in Nanded City, was on his way home in his car, when it was washed away near Dhayari bridge. His body was found in the car on Thursday by NDRF. “I had spoken to him on the phone around 10 pm. He said he will reach home in 15 minutes but....”, said his son Kaushal.

Amrita Anand Sudame (37), a resident of Nanded City, was riding a two-wheeler on her way home from work at 10 pm, when she was washed away. After eight hours of frantic search, her body was found on the ground near Sun City.
