LokSabha 2019: After slow start, voting picks up momentum

PUNE: Polling received momentum slowly in the Pune Lok Sabha constituency as compared to the Baramati constituency on Tuesday. Till afternoon, the city recorded 33.04 per cent turnout while Baramati was much ahead with 41.75 per cent till 3 pm. 

Despite the urban population, polling started on a dull note at 7 am. In the first hour, the voting percentage was below 10 per cent across the polling stations. Most of the voters, who go for morning walks, preferred to vote early in the morning. The trend was similar in housing societies. Shivajinagar (11.38 pc) and Kothrud (9.7 pc) witnessed comparatively better voting percentage in the morning.

After a slow start, polling started increasing gradually from 11 am. By that time, overall 25 per cent voting was registered in the city. People rushed to polling stations from 11 am and 3 pm. Braving sweltering heat, voters came out for voting in the afternoon. 

Party workers helped voters to search names in the electoral list. Though the district administration claimed that voter slips were distributed, people were still taking help of party workers to find their names. Cellphones were used by most of the youngsters to search their names. They were also helping others to provide details of polling booths and the serial number of voters.

Voter turnout reached 33 per cent by afternoon. It was higher in Shivajinagar (35.3 pc) and Kothrud (34.84 pc) as compared to other areas such as Wadgaon Sheri (32.1 pc), Parvati (32.2 pc), Pune Cantonment (31.29 pc) and Kasba Peth (32.43 pc). 

VOTING BETTER IN BARAMATI
Baramati reported 41.75 per cent turnout around 3 pm. In the morning, the first round of voting was below 10 per cent. However, it increased in the afternoon to 41.75 per cent. In Baramati assembly constituency, it was 48.4 per cent as compared to other constituencies such as Daund (39.95 pc), Indapur (38.87 pc), Purandar (40.6 pc). Bhor (41.39 pc) and Khadakwasla (41.05 pc).
