Lion Pavan all set to increase visitors’ footfall at Katraj zoo

PUNE: Visitors to the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, popularly known as Katraj Zoo, will soon come face-to-face with the latest addition to the zoo’s animal family – a four-and-half year old male lion.

The new lion, named Pavan, has been brought to Pune from the Kamla Nehru Prani Sangrahalaya in Indore.

Pavan will be kept in a separate enclosure and visitors will be able to see him from next week, said Director of Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park Rajkumar Jadhav.

The authorities had brought two Asiatic lions in the zoo in 2016, Tejas and Sibbu. Tejas passed away last year and zoo authorities were in search of a new lion.

Jadhav said, “When animals are brought to the zoo, they have to be kept under observation for 21 days.” He added that Pavan will complete his observation period next week.

He added that the zoo has already brought a leopard cat, a jungle cat and an Indian giant squirrel at the zoo, but it will take at least two months to set up their enclosure. A soon it will set up, the authority will allow public to see them.
