Jawale selected as UNESCO GAPMIL’s youth ambassador

PUNE: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) research scholar Dhammaratna Jawale has been selected as the youth ambassador of UNESCO’s Global Alliance for Partnerships on Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL) for Asia-Pacific region among 12 other youth ambassadors.

UNESCO-led programme GAPMIL released the names of 12 youth ambassadors around the world who have been selected to operationalise it in various regions of the world.

Over 600 applications and proposals from across the world were selected for UNESCO’s GAPMIL.

Jawale is a PhD student of Department of Media and Communication Studies at SPPU. He has been pursuing his doctoral research in Sociology of Digital Exclusion as an UGC-Junior Research Fellow under the Head of the Department of Media and Communication Studies Madhavi Reddy.

He has been selected with three other youth ambassadors from Asia-Pacific and other ambassadors from Africa, Arab States, Europe, North America, Latin America and Caribbean countries.

All the youth ambassadors will represent the GAPMIL’s Global Youth Committee for the period 2019-2021.

“My study has broadly been on understanding the social factors that cause social exclusion or digital exclusion. One of the factors is that the social structure and hierarchy play a role in social exclusion. This can be applicable in developing countries like India,” said Jawale.

“As a youth ambassador, my responsibility will be to provide regional inputs to formulate a regional action plan that can bridge the social and digital gap between urban and rural region. This has to be done in association with different government and non-government entities,” said Jawale.

He is planning to begin his work from the university itself.

“I will be proposing the idea of starting my work from SPPU itself to the vice-chancellor. I want to begin it from here and expand it to other State universities. Gradually, I will expand it nation-wide,” added Jawale.
