Javadekar to review JICA project

Javadekar to review JICA project

Pune: After the Congress party raised an objection to Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funded pollution abatement project on Mula-Mutha river, Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar has called a review meeting on Friday.

Javadekar will be in the city after taking charge as Environment Minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet for the second time.

Under JICA project, the corporation will construct 11 new sewage treatment plants (STPs) in different parts of the city for pollution abatement of the Mula-Mutha river. The total cost of the project is Rs 990 crore, which was sanctioned by the Central Government in January 2016.

According to the officials, the corporation has floated tender of six STPs so far. They are preparing tender documents to lay down trunk sewer on the right and left sides of Mula-Mutha river banks, which will carry sewage to the STPs.

On Tuesday, senior Congress leader Mohan Joshi criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for delaying the project. Joshi had issued a press note in which he stated that JICA project was announced on January 13, 2016, for which Japan government had given a loan of Rs 990. However, nothing substantial has been done so far. It is one of the major projects for the city. In the last three years, the corporation was able to spend Rs 35 crore. Out of 11 Sewage treatment plants (STPs), the corporation was able to acquire land for only six STPs.

Now Javadekar has decided to take a review of the project on Sunday. He has planned a visit to the city and organised a meeting to review the project.

The project includes collecting sewage from the point source and diverting it to the sewage treatment plants (STPs), building STPs and treating water released into rivers, building a system that supplies treated water to be reused in agriculture, garden and industrial purposes.
