Irregular garbage collection, overflowing bins haunt residents of Pimpri Chinchwad

PUNE: Garbage is not only the concern of fringe areas but now has started haunting the residents of Pimpri Chinchwad areas as well. From the last several days, residents claimed that garbage has not been collected from their societies and was lying on the streets. Speaking on this issue, Commissioner of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), Shravan Hardikar, stated that due to the change in contractor, this may have happened, but it will be resolved soon.

Member of Board of Manager and member of housekeeping team Apurva Anchan of Ganga Panama situated in Pimple Nilakh said, “Around 20 societies in Pimple Nilakh DP Road were facing problems since the garbage was lying on the streets from last four to five days. Also, the collection of garbage was not taking place regularly. The garbage bins kept on the road were overflowing.”

Founder of Pimpri Chinchwad Housing Society Association, Arun Deshmukh, said, “There are around 3,800 societies under the association. Many residents were complaining that the collection of garbage in their societies was not taking place regularly. Residents had to throw it in the bins but even they are overflowing.”

Sneha Waghmare, a resident of Bhosari, said, “Piles of garbage have been dumped on MIDC Road in Bhosari. It becomes unbearable to ride from Bhosari to Nashik Phata.”

Commenting over the issue, Hardikar said, “The contractors have been changed. Earlier, there were three organisations namely - Savitribai Mahila Swayam Rojgaar, Raj Laxmi Swayam Rojgaar Seva Sanstha and Sant Gadge Maharaj Berojgaar Sanstha. Now, there two new contractors - BVG India Ltd and AG Enviro Infra Projects Pvt Ltd who have started the collection from July 1. There are some issues on garbage vans, therefore, the collection was hampered. But it will get streamlined soon.”

“Every day, we collect 850 to 900 metric tonnes of garbage but from last few days, we are collecting more than 1,000 metric tonnes. The earlier tender was from 2015 to June 2019. The new tender of the two contractors was proposed in 2016, the work order was released in February 2019 and the contractors started implementing their work in July 2019,” Hardikar added.
