Mumbai: All eyes are set on the Worli Assembly seat as the first member from Thackeray family, Aditya is making his debut in electoral politics from this constituency.
Whereas the Shiv Sena is expecting a huge margin of one lakh votes, it may not be possible as backward caste votes may not go with Shiv Sena.
There will no smooth sailing for Sena as NCP’s candidate Suresh Mane has a large following among the backward castes, which have a majority in the constituency. However, the Sena does not consider him as a challenge.
NCP’s Suresh Mane is basically from Bahujan Socialist Party’s (BSP). This seat went to NCP in seat-sharing. Mane is a noted advocate.
The issue of ‘outsider candidate’ is an issue in this constituency. Aditya and Mane are both not residing in the constituency. The other candidates in the fray are Gautam Gaikwad of Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi and Abhijit Bichukle, who earlier contested the reality show ‘Big Boss Marathi’.
Aditya has promised that the constituency will become a model in development in next five years. He said the fishermen’s area (Koli wadas) will be developed as tourist spots and the other small hutments and BDD Chawl will be redeveloped into highrises.
The Koli area became cosmopolitan after the redevelopment of the Mill land in the area. The issue is redevelopment of BDD Chawl and Dhobi Ghat where Marathi people live and backward caste voters are in high numbers.
Mane is focusing on development issues. In the last five years, the BJP-Shiv Sena government could not redevelop the BDD chawl, how will they do it in next five years, Mane is asking voters.
Though NCP’s Sachin Ahir joined Shiv Sena and assured the leaders that he will turn all the NCP cadre in favour of Shiv Sena, he couldn’t do so.
Congress workers are saying Aditya will win. “We are not going to give him a huge margin,” the workers said.
A leader said, “We are focusing that Aditya should not get a huge margin.”
Aditya is appealing to voters in Gujarati, Urdu and Marathi. He wore a ‘lungi’ in a south Indian locality to say them that he is with them. “All this drama won’t work out, as it is going against Shiv Sena. Shiv Sena opposed south Indians in early days, then they opposed North Indians and Gujaratis too. So the Marathi speaking voters are saying that Shiv Sena is doing all this only for votes and the other voters also know this,” said a resident of Worli.
