PUNE: The term ‘October heat’ was hardly used this year by Punekars, as Pune reported the second coolest October since 2009 -- with maximum temperature touching 32.7 degrees Celsius.
Moreover, with India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting rainfall in the coming few days, there is a possibility of delayed winter this year.
Between 2009 and 2018, the highest the mercury shot up in October was reported last year -- 35.6 degrees Celsius on October 11, 2018.
This year, an extended spell of rain and cyclone Kyarr’s effect on the city’s temperature was quite visible with temperature not going beyond 32.7 degrees Celsius.
CAUSE AND EFFECT
Speaking about the erratic weather this October, Anupam Kashyapi, Head of Weather at India Meteorological Department, Pune said the extended monsoon withdrawal and other factors were responsible for change in temperature in October.
“There were continuous weather systems that affected the State due to which the city also reported changing weather throughout the month. As a result of continuous rain, the city did not witness any October heat,”said Kashyapi.
MIN TEMP RISING
However, over the years, a trend is being noticed that the minimum temperature in October has been on the higher side, indicating a rise in temperature globally.
This year, the highest minimum temperature was 19.3 degrees Celsius on October 23 -- the highest since 2009. Pune also witnessed a very small difference between day and night temperature this season. On October 20, day temperature was recorded at 23 degrees Celsius whereas the night temperature was recorded at 20.6 degrees Celsius.
RECORD RAINS
October this year saw good rains in the city. The monthly rainfall this year was reported at 235 mm in Pune city, which was 184 per cent more than normal.
DELAY IN WINTER
Speaking about winter, Kashyapi said as of now, there are predictions of rainfall till November 7. “Winter begins in the State when there are predominant western disturbances (WD) in the north. Winter cannot start until the rains stop. At present the various weather systems indicate that winter will be here only after mid-November,” said Kashyapi.
