H’way police take action against 15,000 errant drivers on E-way

Pune: To thwart the increasing number of vehicles flouting traffic rules on the 94 km stretch of Pune-Mumbai Expressway, the State highway police has started taking stringent action against errant drivers.

In just one month in September, the cops have taken action against about 15,000 errant drivers. Most of them were found cutting lanes on the Expressway. After strict action by police, drivers are falling in line and it is helping in reducing accidents, officials said.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and the Highway Police is implementing India’s first IT-based surveillance system on the E-way. The system will become fully functional in the next two months.

The E-way has three lanes in each carriageway and each serves a different purpose. The first lane (along the divider) is for overtaking, the second lane is for light vehicles and the third one is for buses and other
heavy vehicles.

“Many vehicle drivers do not follow the traffic rules on the E-way. In September, we issued challans to 15,000 vehicles i.e. 500 vehicles were issued challans every day. Lane cutting is a major cause of accidents,” said Superintendent of Police, Highway Safety Patrol (HSP), Milind Mohite.

According to the Highway Police, the average rate of action being taken against vehicles indulging in violation of lane discipline is between 4,000 and 5,000 every month.
