Grapes The Latest Victims Of Excessive Rains In State

Pune: The grapes orchards of Junnar taluka suffered losses because of excessive rains. The grapes were in the flowering stage.

“The grapes were in the flowering stage. Because of the extended rainfall, pests have attacked the fruit as well as the bunches. It was likely that grape growers in the area are facing the loss of around 80 per cent of produce,” said Jitendra Bidwai, President, Junnar Taluka Grapes Growers Association. 

Bidwai further informed, “The gardens pruned on around September 5-15 were in full flowering condition and will be the ones taking the brunt. It is likely that due to rain, these orchards will face damage of 20 to 50 per cent to the produce. However, the extent depends on how long the rains continue. If the rains continue further, the damage may increase.”

The President, Junnar Taluka Grapes Growers Association. mentioned that the constant rainfall also resulted in various diseases which increased the cost of production for farmers to around 30 per cent of investment to control the diseases incurred due to the excessive rainfall.

“The worst affected were the early pruning orchards as its pruning was started in August end, among them few of were in Bori village in Indapur taluka and Narayangaon. It is likely that due to ongoing rain, there will be some damage. However, it still raining, therefore, we cannot asses the exact damage now.
 
The rain not only damaged the climbers but also result in various diseases due to which farmers will also face the problem of residue on the fruit,” said Sopan Kanchan, President, All India Grapes Growers Association of India.

“Once theses climbers get damaged in the flowering stage, it is a wait for another year for the farmers,” added Kanchan.
