Govt should take firm action: SIO

Pune: The Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) on Monday held a press conference in a bid to express its discontent over inaction by the government and the police in the Najeeb Ahmed disappearance case.

The organisation also condemned the assault on the freedom of expression evident through the brutal murder of senior journalist Gauri Lankesh.

Najeeb Ahmed, a student first year M.Sc biotechnology at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Delhi, went missing under suspicious circumstances after being bullied.

After a year of several protests across the nation and involvement of CBI in the case, there is no progress in the case. The government should take a firm action against the issues related to students, else a strong student assault could take place, warned SIO-India.

Adil Pathan (Pune City President), Mohammad Salman (South Maharashtra Head) and Nahas Mala (National President, SIO-India) were present.

Speaking on the occasion, Mohammad Salman said, “ It’s not just Najeeb’s or Muslim community’s issue. In fact, we are planning to form joint action committees in collaboration with Dalit groups, liberals, seculars and other like-minded entities.

We are planning several joint protests in different cities and districts to build pressure on the government.” He added, “To prevent Dalit atrocities like the one that happened in case of Rohit Vemula, there is a need to ensure social justice and equality for students in campuses.

Time bound, result oriented investigation into murders of Narendra Dabolkar, Govind Pansare, Najeeb Ahmed and Gauri Lankesh are needed.”

SIO-India spoke about the recent murder of activist-journalist Gauri Lankesh. SIO questioned government, administration and judiciary about the secularism and law and order of the nation.
