Give 80 pc jobs to locals or lose subsidy: Desai

MUMBAI: Industries Minister Subhash Desai on Thursday warned the industries to give 80 per cent jobs to the locals or else, the State government will stop the various subsidies given to them by the government.

After Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh governments, Maharashtra is all set to ensure that 80 per cent of industrial

jobs are provided to locals across the State. The State government had already issued a government resolution in 1968 that locals should get employment in the industries. The policy was amended gradually.

Even after implementing the policy, the industries in the State are not recruiting locals. The government had already formed a committee at every district level. The district collector is chief of the committee and State development commissioner is chief of the state-level committee. Now, the government has decided to implement the policy strictly to provide 80 per cent of the jobs to locals in industries across Maharashtra.

“Industries are obligated to give 80 per cent of jobs to locals - domiciled in Maharashtra - as most of them avail various incentives by the State,” said Desai.

In 2008, the previous Congress-NCP government had passed the order but the committee at the district level, set up to oversee implementation, failed to enforce it. “We found out that industries do not employ 80 per cent of locals. There is a committee at the district level that looks into it but it has not been enforced fully. To correct this, the government formed a committee,” Desai said.

According to the data, there are 3,052 major industries and 1,91,140 employees are in the superintendent and above grade, the percentage is 84 per cent of the total employees. Whereas 8,73,795 employees are working in the labour category and the percentage of locals in the category is 90 per cent. In 1,026,992 small scale industries, the percentage of local employees is also 90 per cent.
