Pune: Five youngsters have been arrested for rioting and assaulting a 19-year-old youth over an old rivalry on Tuesday afternoon in Ganj Peth. The five accused were arrested by police on Wednesday and have been remanded in police custody till December 30.
The accused have been identified as Apurva Khandagale (18), Sonya Khandagale (20), Anil Gaikwad (18) and Sahil Sayyad (18), all residents of Ghorpade Peth and Rajesh Kasbe (18), a resident of Lohiya Nagar. The five youngsters assaulted complainant Akshay Patole over an old rivalry in the lane of his house in Ganj Peth area of Khadak.
The accused came on two motorcycles on Tuesday afternoon and assaulted Patole who was talking with a friend in his locality. They attacked him with a chopper causing injuries on his hand and on the forehead. They also roughed up one of his friends who tried to stop them. While locals intervened to stop them, the accused brandishing chopper in their hands threatened to kill them and started running after the locals present at the spot.
Vaibhav Pawar, Assistant Police Inspector, Khadak police station said, “Patole was attacked as he had a confrontation with the accused a day before the incident (Monday). The accused assaulted Patole and threatened the locals of the area with weapons saying they have the support of a gangster.”
The police have booked all the accused for rioting and section 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.
