Five men arrested in Jagtap suicide case

Pune: Five men have been arrested in connection with abetment of suicide of activist Jitendra Jagtap. However, NCP corporator Deepak Mankar and builder Sudhir Karnataki are yet to be nabbed as they are ‘unreachable’.

DCP (Zone 2) Pravin Mundhe said, “Investigations are going on to nab the accused persons. As per the complaint, there was a dispute related to land between Jagtap and accused persons.”

The arrested persons have been identified as Vinod Bhole, Sudhir Satar, Amit Tanpure, Atul Pawar, and Vishal Kamble. As per the FIR with Samarth police station, the accused were allegedly threatening Jagtap regarding a plot in Rasta Peth.

Jagtap had committed suicide by jumping in front of a train between Hadapsar and Ghorpadi on Saturday.

After the police recovered a suicide note, Jagtap’s son Jayesh (26) lodged a complaint against the accused persons with Government Railway Police (GRP), which transferred the case to Samarth police station for further investigation. Jagtap’s younger brother Shailesh is a head constable with the Pune city police.

According to the police, Jagtap worked as a custodian for the land situated near the Samarth police station. There was a dispute between Mankar, who owns the land and Jagtap regarding payment for his services as custodian. “There had been three meetings regarding the same. In the meeting on Friday, they had again threatened my father of dire consequences. They wanted him to sign papers and father wanted the payments done before signing,” Jayesh told police.

Police officials said that when Jagtap went to the plot on Saturday, the accused Bhole and others intimidated him.

After that, he went to the railway track and committed suicide.
