First monsoon rain exposes PMC’s tall claims

Pune: After the first monsoon shower on Monday exposed the tall claims of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) about pre-monsoon work with waterlogging seen on many roads, Municipal Commissioner Kunal Kumar said the PMC has identified the spots where waterlogging is a major problem.

Speaking to the press  on Tuesday, Kumar accepted that many areas experienced waterlogging when there was just 27 mm rainfall but he said that the civic administration has identified several critical spots where it needs to work to mitigate the waterlogging problem.

Since the beginning, there was a hue and cry about the tardy pre-monsoon work, but the civic administration claimed that the important pre-monsoon work was done on priority.

Some regional ward offices floated the tender in June to carry out the pre-monsoon work like cleaning of nalas and stormwater drains when the deadline for pre-monsoon work was May 31.

The civic chief said he would appoint a dedicated officer to look after the monsoon-related problems on a priority basis. The officer would also be responsible for cleaning and repairing nalas.

On Monday, many low-lying areas like Deccan Gymkhana, peth areas, arterial roads like Sinhagad Road, Karve Road and JM Road experienced waterlogging.
