Feasibility study of Mumbai-Pune hyperloop to take six months

Pune: Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) Chief Kiran Gitte on Friday said that Virgin Hyperloop One, the company planning to build hyperloop between Mumbai and Pune, is in process of doing a feasibility study of the project. After this study, the State government will be able to take a decision on the use of the technology. Gitte said that Puneites should be positive about the technology as hyperloop technology is the fifth revolution in transportation technology after airplanes, trains, ships and automobiles.

"The team of Virgin Hyperloop One (VHO) is working on the feasibility study of the Mumbai-Pune route for hyperloop. VHO has invested Rs 12 crore from their pocket for the study. We must be fortunate that PMRDA has been given the responsibility for implementation of the project," added Gitte.

Earlier, VHO had carried out the pre-feasibility study and it was found that hyperloop route between the two cities is a feasible option. "If the project is approved, we can see the hyperloop ready by 2025. In case of the metro project, we say that metro should have been started 10 years ago. The ring road project was planned in 1997. Similarly, in the future, people will say that hyperloop project should have started 10 years ago," added Gitte.

Hyperloop has the capability of travelling up to a spped of 1,000 km in an hour. The journey from Mumbai to Pune will take 14-25 minutes at the speed of 350 kmph, which now takes about 3.5 hours. The present route will link central Pune, Navi Mumbai International Airport and Mumbai.
