Farmers to protest on Nov 29 and 30

Pune: Around 200 farmers’ organisations are coming together in New Delhi on November 29 and 30. Agriculture organisations are also coming together for spreading awareness among the public about their issues at Good Luck Chowk in the city at 6 pm on November 29. Also, a protest march will be carried out in the city from Mazur Adda at Budhwar Chowk to District Collector’s Office at 2.30 pm on November 30.

Speaking about the initiative, Dr Dnyaneshwar Mote, from Nation For Farmers said that in a democracy, demanding a separate session to discuss issues faced by farmers across the country is democratic.

“Year after year due to faulty policies, farmers’ problems are increasing. Every citizen goes numb after hearing about the farmers’ suicides. Around three lakh farmers committed suicide between 1995 and 2015. However, National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) has not accounted for farmers’ suicides since 2015,” said Mote.

He said seeds and manure are not regulated by the government. “Except for urea no pesticide is under price regulation. The minimum price decided by the government has in the past few years reduced significantly. Between 2009 and 2013 the minimum price was increased by 19.30 per cent. However, between 2014 and 2017, that increase has only been 3.6 per cent,” said  Mote.

He said similarly, investment in agriculture between 2013-14 and 2016-2017 has reduced by 2.3 per cent.

“Loan availability between 2014-2015 and 2016-2017 has reduced to 12.3 per cent. Thus, the rural set-up is in stress. According to government’s data of 2011-2012, one out of four families doing agriculture is facing severe financial crisis. Similarly production is below poverty line,” said Dr Mote.

He added that in rural parts of the country, employment generated due to agriculture is merely for three months. Hence, the farmers will soon migrate to the city but with no employment opportunities here as well will face similar issues, he said.
