Expect metro coaches by middle of 2021, says Dixit

PUNE: MahaMetro Managing Director Brijesh Dixit on Tuesday said that the coaches of Pune Metro which will be manufactured by Titagarh Firema, a wholly-owned Italian subsidiary of Titagarh Wagons Limited, are expected in Pune by middle of 2021. Dixit on Tuesday inaugurated a three coach train of Mahametro which they had brought from Nagpur.

About 102 aluminium-bodied coaches will be manufactured by Titagarh Firema for Pune Metro of which 25 per cent of coaches will be produced at their plant in Italy and 75 per cent will be produced and commissioned at the Mahametro coach manufacturing plant in Nagpur.

The metro coaches which were brought on Sunday in Pimpri Chinchwad are currently placed at Sant Tukaram Nagar Station. Dixit said that the world-class coaches of metro and stations of Metro will depict Pune’s culture. For instance, the Sant Tukaram Nagar station will carry the images of Sant Tukaram and Warkari Dindi procession artwork. Pune Metro train has a unique distinction of having a dedicated women’s coach, and other features like lightweight, broad gangway, regenerative braking, advanced communication system, electronic gadgets charging facilities, air condition, priority seating for the disabled, pregnant women, elderly and wheelchair-bound persons, appropriate signages, passenger information displays, door opening LED strip (well lit and indicate the side of platform) and larger windows to see the spectacular view of greenery in  Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.

The coach graphic theme draws clues from the Sahyadri mountain and the historical, cultural, educational and industrial heritage of Pune city. The coach design is inspired by Shaniwarwada, Mahatma Phule Mandai, IT Park, and Tabla and Tanpura which resembles the rich tradition of art and music. The colour used for the coach graphics represents the rich tradition and culture of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad City.

MahaMetro officials said that the coaches are painted with colour bars as the orange colour resembles youthfulness, creativity and joyfulness of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad citizens. The blue colour represents truthfulness, intelligence and confidence of its citizens. The valour, power and dedication of the people of this city is represented by the purple colour. “Green colour is the most dominant colour of the city as you will find lots of trees and greenery in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad,” said a MahaMetro official.

Dixit said that metro coaches are improving on design and quality over a period of time. “Aluminium is used in these coaches which makes the coach lighter compared to steel coaches. This further helps in saving on power. Thirty per cent of the energy consumed by train returns back to the system by regenerative braking system,” added Dixit.
