Excise officials catch man for selling spurious liquor

PUNE: Officials of the flying squad of the State Excise Department on Monday nabbed  a 35-year-old man allegedly involved in selling spurious Scotch whisky in Pimpale Gurav. The arrested accused was identified as Naga Chavda, a resident of Pimpale Gurav. According to State Excise Superintendent B Tadvi, the flying squad of Excise Department apprehended Chavda who was on a two-wheeler. 

When Chavda was frisked, the Excise officials found two whisky bottles. The bottles appeared tampered. When the officials raided the residence of the accused they found 67 one litre bottles of liquor of different brands, 500 empty bottles, 2,000 whisky caps, 260 labels and 950 cover boxes. The Excise officials said the accused was mixing cheap whisky in branded liquor bottles to earn profit during the election period. They said people should refrain from buying cheap liquor and also from untrusted sources. 

Police Sub-Inspector S Daberao of Excise Department is investigating the case. Officials said six flying squads of seven members each has been deployed to curb transport and sale of illicit liquor in the district during Lok Sabha elections. The flying squads keep a watch on the daily sale of liquor at liquor shops to track bulk sale during the election period. The squads also visit hotels, bars and restaurants to keep a tab on suspicious activities. The squad is also responsible for keeping a watch on production, import, export of liquor in the district.
