Engineers, be prepared for future in robotics and automation: Dr Nguyen

"Robotics is not only used for performing complex tasks but also for monitoring, supervising and controlling processes; hence, students and budding engineers must be prepared for a future in robotics and automation," said Dr Bao Kha Nguyen, Senior Lecturer, University of Sussex.

Pune: The application of robotics in various fields such as medical, military, industry, industrial automation, agriculture, autonomous vehicles is increasing with every passing day. 

"Robotics is not only used for performing complex tasks but also for monitoring, supervising and controlling processes; hence, students and budding engineers must be prepared for a future in robotics and automation," said Dr Bao Kha Nguyen, Senior Lecturer, University of Sussex.

Dr Nguyen was talking on the occasion of the online celebration of Engineer's day celebration at Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) College of Engineering Pune (BV(DU)COE Pune) on Tuesday. 

Dr Nguyen started with some examples of advanced robotics around the world such as Sophie. He explained the basic terms involved in robotics, their application in various fields such as medical, military, industry as well as industrial automation, agriculture, autonomous vehicles and so on, not only for performing complex tasks but also for monitoring, supervising and controlling processes. 

He also shared some working demonstration of the autonomous vehicle, and also the smart robots of bird, dog and fish developed to mimic the animal behaviour and explained how they control their operations along with their internal structure. He also discussed the robotics and automation course being offered at the University of Sussex and even at BV(DU)COE Pune. 

He elaborated on the skills and experiences that these courses help to acquire and what career options are available to the students pursuing these courses. 

"Students undergoing this undergraduate course find a wide variety of exposure in all fields of applications of robotics in various capacities such as structure designing, programming, framing mechanisms, robot design and implementation and so on, in India and abroad with an average salary ranging from 25,000 pounds from 55,000 pounds," said Dr Nguyen, before sharing a list of vacancies in robotics and automation available globally.  

Dr Anand Bhalerao, Principal, BV(DU)COE Pune, said, "Celebrate Engineer's day to learn, design and organise ourselves as per the life of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya." 

He further said that September 15 should not be celebrated as an Engineer's Day merely to commemorate the birthday of Sir Mokshgondum Visvesvaraya, but to inculcate his way of living, his quest for technical excellence, his way of living, his ethics and value system. He gave some excerpts from the life of Sir Visvesaraya to show how he struggled in his early life for education, but he was so dedicated and determined to his profession that even British government bestowed him with recognition as a Chief Engineer. 

Dr Anand Bhalerao also extended his welcome to the guest speaker on this occasion, Dr Nguyen, Senior Lecturer, University of Sussex, who joined this programme online to share his views on job opportunities in Robotics and Automation.
