Dumping at DP road; violation of NGT order

PUNE: Residents of the DP Road staying between Mhatre Bridge and Rajaram Bridge on Thursday claimed that dumping of waste material was going on near the Krushnasundar Lawns, which was declared a green zone by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in an order issued in July.

The NGT issued an order in July stating that in case of unauthorised haphazard dumping of the solid waste material by marriage halls or lawns takes place, they will be liable to pay Rs 50,000 as environmental cost per incident to respective urban local body and the same will be recovered by the urban local body.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Sarang Yadwadkar, an activist and resident confirmed to Sakal Times that he noticed dumpers dumping waste near Krushnasundar Lawns at 6.45 am on Thursday.

“When I checked again, the waste material dump was there at 9.30 am and also at 12 noon. There were several dumpers putting waste. I notified the concerned authorities but I am not aware if any appropriate action has been taken. I feel the dumping is being done purposely as PMC offices will be closed for three days on the account of Ganesh festival and due to the weekend,” said Yadwadkar.

He added that he has already informed about this incident to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Commissioner Kunal Kumar as well as the chief irrigation officer.

Another resident, Sanjay Deshpande noted that the spot is sealed so no one is allowed inside to take a look. “It is a private plot and was sealed when we tried to visit it and check what work was going on,” said Deshpande.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Advocate Aseem Sarode said that the PMC and the Irrigation Department are the two authorities responsible for taking action against this immediately.

“It is the duty of these two authorities to check that the order is not violated. They are bound to protect the green zone. Several complaints can be launched following which the offender can be fined as per the type and amount of waste dumped on the river bed,” said Sarode.

Despite several attempts, PMC Commissioner Kunal Kumar was not available for comments.
