Drinking and driving may make it difficult to get passport, visa

PUNE: Those caught by Pune traffic police for drunk driving during New Year celebrations, might face difficulty in getting their visa approved for foreign travel.

The Pune traffic police have set up 130 nakabandi points at multiple locations in the city in a bid to intensify action against people involved in drunk driving.

This arrangement will be in place till January 1 midnight. Police squads will check drivers using breathalyser and will book people whose reading shows 0.3 (30mg of alcohol per 100 ml blood).

Officials from the Traffic Department stated that there is heavy police deployment this time. Pune Police Commissioner K Venkatesham said, “We have launched stringent action against the violators which can have serious implication on their careers.” Many a times people need character certificate or other certificates from police authorities to apply for the passport or visa, (if caught for drunk driving) they may faced problems, said Venkatesham.

Until now, cases were being filed in a court against the drunk and driving cases but now Pune police have confirmed that vehicles would be seized immediately if anyone is found driving in drunken state. Traffic police will ensure that action would be taken and there would be a proper video recording of the incidents.
