DRI of Pune seizes ganja worth Rs 1.25 crore

Ganja worth Rs 1.25 crore was seized on Manchar Nirgudsar Road near Pimplegaon Khadi on Tuesday.

Based on specific intelligence, the officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) of Pune Regional Unit with assistance from the officers and staff of Pune Customs 149 packets of ‘ganja’ weighing 835.48 kg was confiscated. A case has been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act (NDPS), 1985.

As per information shared by DRI, a truck (Registration No. AP-27-W-2461) and an escorting vehicle (MH 12 QF 4567) were intercepted. “During the detailed examination of the truck at Pune Customs office it was found that a false bottom has been created in the carriage part of the truck which can be seen only after opening the bolts on particular places on the vertical side (balli) of the carriage space of the truck,” said a statement released by the DRI. 149 rectangular packets wrapped in the brown adhesive tape were recovered from the false bottom.

On opening the packets, it was found to contain a greenish-brown substance which is suspected to be ‘ganja’. The total weight of the 149 packets was found to be 835.48 kg valued at Rs 1,25,32,200.  

Five persons, including three who were in the escorting vehicle, were arrested under Section 42 of the NDPS Act, 1985. The accused were initially remanded to judicial custody by the NDPS Court, Khed.  “A new regional unit of DRI has started operations from Pune and this seizure has been one of the biggest seizures of ‘ganja’ in Pune in recent months. 

Further investigation in the case is in progress,” reads the statement.
