Dr Geeta Iyengar passes away

Pune: Dr Geeta S Iyengar, daughter of Yogacharya BKS Iyengar passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 74. A renowned ‘yoga guru’ herself, she passed away due to a heart attack. 

She had taken the responsibility of all her disciples and her family since the demise of her mother in 1973. She is survived by her brother Prashant and her four sisters. She was cremated on Sunday itself at Vaikunth Crematorium in Navi Peth.

Learning and teaching yoga since the young age of 11, she did her doctorate in Ayurveda.

She taught classes in the last fortnight to a generation of students from 56 countries at Balewadi, Pune at Yogacharya BKS Iyengar’s birth centenary celebrations.
 
She was also the author of the landmark book ‘Yoga - A Gem for Women’, amongst many others. In fact, speaking to Sakal Times earlier on the occasion of the beginning of the birth centenary year of her father in December last year, she had said, “Guruji understood that yoga was necessary for women as well. Even today, Iyengar Yoga addresses the women’s health issues, whether it’s puberty, infertility or any other women’s disorders.”
