Doctors advise patients about surviving winter

PUNE: Doctors in the city have a word of caution for patients especially those having some problem with bones and heart. The temperature fluctuations have increased the risk.

Dr Pramod Narkhede, Consultant Cardiologist, Columbia Asia Hospital, Pune said “Last year, the hospital performed about 30 per cent angioplasties in summer and 50 per cent in winter. ”

He explained that the blood vessels come under pressure as our skin shrinks to keep our bodies warm during the cold weather. “This narrows the vessel and increases the speed of blood flow in them. Besides, our heart pumps more blood in winter months to keep the body warm. Low body temperature, lower availability of Vitamin D and an increase of blood viscosity are also some other causes of cardiovascular diseases in winter as compared to summer months,” he added.

He said it was advisable to reduce appetite for unhealthy food, use smaller plates and limit alcohol intake. “Start an indoor exercise programme at home, or walk at the local shopping mall,” said Dr Narkhede.

Talking about arthritis patients, Dr Neeraj Adkar, Director of Saishree Hospital for Special Surgery and Joint Replacement Surgeon said it is known that symptoms of arthritis worsen during winter.

He suggested that an increase in disease activity can be marked by the appearance of or increase in the symptoms. “There can be an increase in pain, swelling and stiffness. There are a few precautions we can take to make life easy for sensitive patients. Wear soft and warm clothing. Take proper healthy and wholesome nutritious diet, drink plenty of water, exercise regularly, take Vitamin D supplements as per doctors’ advice. Consult your doctor and enjoy the winter,” he advised.
