Dilapidated compound wall collapses; no one injured

PUNE: A private housing society compound wall collapsed  in Dhankawadi on Friday morning.  No casualties were reported. This is third incident of wall collapse in a  month so far. In the earlier incidents, 21 people died. 

According to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials, Phoolwati Apartment  compound wall collapsed at 5.35 am on Friday. It is a ground plus two storied building located at Sawarkar Chowk in Dhankawadi. The PMC had sent notices to the society regarding the dilapidated compound wall. 

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Building Development and Control Department Superintendent Engineer Yuvraj Deshmukh said, “I visited the spot. There are no casualties. The compound wall height was three meters and some part of the wall collapsed. It was the front side of the society. We have vacated the first floor flat as a precautionary measure and issued a notice to reconstruct a wall as per the PMC’s specification.”

He said, “It is an old apartment constructed before merger of Dhankawadi village  with PMC limits.” 

After the previous two wall collapse incidents, the PMC started a drive to send notices to societies which have dilapidated compound walls. 

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has also taken suo moto action to demolish dangerous compound walls. Till date, the PMC has sent notices to 489 societies for dangerous compound walls.
