DEO stresses on need to improve gender ratio of voters

Pune: The Deputy Election Officer (DEO) of Pune district, Monica Singh, on Thursday said that there is a need of balancing the gender ratio of voters of Pune. She was speaking at a felicitation ceremony of 123 millennium voters who got their Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) at SP College on Thursday morning.

“The current gender ratio of voters is 908 females for 1,000 males in 2017. The previous year, it stood at 905 females to 1000 males. Though there is a minor rise in the gender ratio, there is a need to balance it. Assembly constituency 215 of Kasba Peth has a ratio of 1014 females to 1000 males, reflecting the awareness among females towards electoral process in the constituency,” added Singh.

Actor Rahul Solapurkar, actress Mrinal Kulkarni, Additional Collector Ramesh Kale, winner of Chattrapati Rajya Krida Puraskar Dinesh Pande were present for the event. Speaking on the occasion, Dinesh said that people must understand the value of their votes and not treat the election day as a holiday.

Actor Rahul Solapurkar highlighted that about 81 crore people are eligible for voting in the country. Of this, the voting percentage is around 60 per cent. “Of the 60 per cent voting, the votes are further divided, as there are multiple parties standing for election. This clearly reflects that of the total population of the country, a small percentage of people support the winning party. This situation can only improve if all persons are exercising their right to cast their votes,” added Solapurkar.
Actress Mrinal Kulkarni said, “It is time for those who have turned eighteen years of age to be a part of politics and be aware of things happening in the society, which will shape their decision-making skills required to elect a right leader for themselves.”

Millenium voters, physically handicapped voters, orphans, transgenders, commercial sex workers were felicitated at the event to appreciate the importance of their role in the electoral system.
