Demand for water tankers goes up in Pune region

PUNE: With the rise in temperature, the demand for water tankers in Pune region increased by 46 in the last one week, taking the total to 446.

Pune, Solapur, Sangli, Satara and Kolhapur are classified under Pune region. While there is a demand for tankers from other districts, there is no demand from Kolhapur yet.

In the last three weeks, the number of water tankers operational in Pune region has increased by 146 water tankers. While there are 87 water tankers operational in Pune district, the situation in Solapur, Satara, and Sangli districts appears grim as the number of water tankers operational in Satara is 118, Solapur 125 and Sangli 116. 

Following the drought situation in Pune, the demand for water tankers has increased from 74 to 87 in the last 15 days. 

The State had earlier announced drought in 151 talukas and 318 revenue circles. Of which, 7 talukas fall in Pune district.

With the rise in temperature, officials are expecting that the demand will further rise  to 150 in a few weeks and are hoping for a timely monsoon. 

According to the Irrigation Department the current water level has reached 10.25 TMC compared to 14.49 TMC on March 23 last year, a striking change. 

The PMC is currently lifting 1,350 MLD water as against 1,150 MLD as advised by the State 
Irrigation Department. 

There are no water cuts announced till date by the PMC this season, but if needed water cuts might be implemented.
