Deceased workers were not paid since 6 months

Pune: Bimal Sharma, a survivor of the Kondhwa wall collapse incident, said that this was the first time that huts were constructed so close to the society wall, resulting in the accident.

Sharma, who lost his brother Alok Sharma in this accident, said, “I woke up at around 1:20 am, as I was not feeling good and I could not sleep. After five to ten minutes, I heard some loud voice and then realised that the wall had caved in. I immediately started shouting for help, so the people next to my hut realised that I was alive and would come to my rescue.

“We have been coming to Pune for the past several years but earlier our huts used to be built at a distance from the wall. However, this time, the huts were too close to the wall and due to heavy rainfall, it collapsed,” added Sharma.

Narayan Joshi, a relative of Avdesh Singh, who died in the incindent, said, “There were workers who were waiting for their payment from the last six months. They were all planning to leave once they got their payments. Meanwhile, this incident happened and he died. The deceased have kids and family back at home and they should be provided with some compensation.

He further said, “The Collector has informed us that he will send Avdesh Singh's body. However, the builder has not yet bothered to come and meet us.”

Relative of deceased Lakshmikant Sahni said, “He was the only earning member of his family and they were dependent on him. After his death, who will look after the family now.”
