Cybercrime victims get back Rs 4.58 lakh

Pune: In the last week, the Cyber Crime police station, Pune city police, helped cybercrime victims get a refund of Rs 4.58 lakh.

The victims were duped in cases of debit/credit card frauds in the period from March 24 to 30.

According to the police, in cases where the victim has shared the OTP (One Time Password) online and then lost money, he/she does not get a refund from the bank. In such cases, the money is usually lost in the transactions through various merchants or wallets. The Cyber Crime Cell (CCC) contacted these merchants/ wallets through email and ensured a refund.

In one such case, Prakash Bhateja lost Rs 10,000 in an online fraud while shopping on Amazon. After successful correspondence with PayTM (through which the transactions were done), the CCC got the amount refunded to the victim.  In another case, Rs 5,000 was refunded to Sangeeta Dole, who lost her money during a transaction on ‘Make My Trip’.

Police officials said that in incidents where the victims have lost money in online frauds without sharing OTP, the bank is responsible for refund of the amount lost. The CCC then corresponds with the banks and the money is reimbursed to the victim after a stipulated number of days through the bank or merchant/wallet.

One of the victims, Belida Bhatia lost Rs 75,000 due to an unauthorised transaction on her credit card abroad. Immediate correspondence with the HDFC Bank in this regard helped her get a full refund of the amount.

The operation was conducted by the officers and police personnel at the Cyber Crime police station, located at police headquarters in Shivajinagar, under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cybercrime) Sambhaji Kadam, Assistant Commissioner of Police Nilesh More and Senior Police Inspector Radhika Phadke.
