Craze for fancy nos. boon to Pune RTO

Pune: Vehicle owners in Pune are always ready to pay a heavy amount to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) Pune, to get a number of their choice for their vehicles.

According to details provided by the Transport Department, Pune tops among the four RTOs including Mumbai, Thane and Nashik. The Pune RTO earns around Rs 2 crore every month by issuing choice numbers to vehicle owners on their request.

According to RTO officials, citizens’ desire for gleaming, well maintained vehicles is overwhelming. The fad for personlised registration numbers helps the department to generate crores of rupees every month.

“People are crazy about a particular number on their vehicles. Most of them approach us before we release a notification for the same with a request to provide a number of their choice,” said Sanjay Raut, Deputy Regional Transport Officer of Pune.

As per the data provided by the officials, the Pune RTO earned Rs 12,67,67,500 from January to June 2018 after issuing 15,840 such numbers. The Pimpri-Chinchwad RTO earned Rs 5,02,81,840 during the same period.

“Due to the choice number, the Pune RTO earned around Rs 2 crore every month for the last six months, which is the highest earning across the State,” Raut said.

“The Pune RTO alone earned Rs 2.91 crore in January. However, the revenue decreased to Rs 1.17 crore in February,” he said.

We got the highest revenue of Rs 3.02 crore in March after issuing 3,725 such numbers. These figures show that demand for choice numbers is still very high as vehicle owners also see it as a status symbol,” he added.
