COVID-19: Pune reports highest death toll in a day

Pune district recorded 2,613 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the tally to 75,400, while the death toll increased by record 66 (in Pune Metropolitan region) to reach 1,858 on Wednesday.

From the new cases, 1,133 are from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) jurisdiction, which now has 47,919 cases followed by 1,130 cases in Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation limit (PCMC). With this PCMC now has 18,771 cases, while the toll in the rural and cantonment areas is 8,710. On Wednesday, a total of 591 people 2,543 patients were discharged on Tuesday. 32,623 patients have been discharged so far in the city.

845 patients are in serious conditions with 432 are on ventilator support, PMC said. As much as 5,919 tests (including rapid antigen) were conducted on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has selected exact roles to two officers in the battle against the novel infection, with recently-deputed officer Nitin Bilolikar being assigned of working for checking the spread of the COVID-19 while Ramchandra Hankare has been given the responsibility of monitoring the treatment of patients.

Hankare has been leading the PMC’s health department, the state government has brought in additional health officer Bilolikar as cases in the Pune city rise rapidly, with PMC witnessing among the highest cases in the country. Hankare has been specified the responsibility of office work, management of health department staff and COVID care centres and management of private hospital beds.

Also, Bilolikar will be in charge of other responsibilities, which has a collection of samples of suspected patients, with the management of laboratory reports, tracing and surveys, updating data on the websites, management of the ‘war room’ and home quarantine and enabling the use of PMC hospitals for coronavirus patients.
