COVID-19 positivity rate in Pune jumped to 40 per cent as compared to 25 per cent on Saturday when 1,521 patients were found positive from 6,090 samples

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) tested 2505 samples on Sunday – almost one-third of its usual 6,000 plus daily count – but the total positive cases identified count of them was 992, which means the positivity rate jumped to 40 per cent as compared to 25 per cent on Saturday when 1,521 patients were found positive from 6,090 samples.

What is more worrying for Punekars is that the total number of critical patients is not coming down which means the shortage of ventilator, oxygen and ICU beds will continue to haunt patients and relatives this week too.

According to PMC’s daily medical bulletin, till 9 pm on Sunday (July 26) night, there were 18298 active cases out of which 682 were the total critical patients. Of the critical cases, 105 patients were on invasive ventilator support and 577 were serious patients with comorbidities in ICU, oxygen therapy and non-invasive ventilator support. The total number of deaths reported on Sunday was 13 and patients recovered and discharged were 1,175. PMC had tested 2,505 samples on Sunday through RT-PCR and antigen rapid test kits out of which 992 cases were identified to be COVID-19 positive.

If these numbers are compared with PMC’s 9 pm bulletin for Saturday (July 25), active cases were 18494 of which 673 were total critical patients. From the critical patient count, 115 were on invasive ventilator support and 558 were serious patients with comorbidities in ICU, oxygen therapy and non-invasive ventilator support. On Saturday, 20 deaths were reported and 693 patients were discharged after they recovered from COVID-19 disease. A total of 6090 samples were collected on Saturday out of which 1521 had tested positive for COVID-19. The positivity rate was 25 per cent.

The positivity rate is crucial in containing the spread of the coronavirus as it also indicates the total population affected by the contagion. So far, the positivity rate was hovering over 25 per cent, but it has suddenly jumped to 40 per cent.

PMC health officials have cited low testing count and higher positivity count due to two factors. First being a ‘Sunday’ and the second reason that 2290 results were awaited from Saturday’s tests.
