Pune: Local administration in rural parts of Haveli tehsil have reserved beds for COVID-19 patients in 14 private hospitals, but only 3 of them are providing free treatment to patients as they have enrolled under the government-sponsored Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MPJAY) scheme. The remaining hospitals have refused to enrol themselves under this scheme and are charging exorbitant fees for COVID-19 treatment on poor and needy patients.

The Zilla Parishad health department has reserved beds for COVID-19 patients in Vishwaraj Hospital in Loni Kalbhor, Navale Hospital, Pulse Hospital in Narhe, Chintamani Hospital, Prayagdham hospital in Koregaon, Lotus Hospital, Mahesh Smruti Hospital in Shewalewadi, Bharat Sanskriti Hospital, Lifeline Hospital, Imax Hospital, Care Hospital in Wagholi, Shlok hospital in Shivapur, Shivam Hospital in Kadamwak Wasti and Yog Hospital in Manjri Budruk. Out of these only Vishwaraj, Navale and Care Hospital are providing free treatment to COVID-19 patients admitted to their facilities under the MPJAY scheme. The remaining hospitals are charging anywhere between four thousand to seven thousand rupees per day to the patient.

MLA Ashok Pawar has appealed to all hospitals to enrol themselves under the MPJAY scheme so that poor and needy patients can avail good healthcare facilities in nearby areas of their residence. "If the hospitals have any problem for enrolling under the scheme, then as the elected representative from this region I will help them in all possible ways. But if any hospital deliberately denies treatment to any patient then we won't hesitate to take strict action against the hospital," Pawar has warned.

Pawar said, "Getting treatment for COVID-19 is the patient's right. The expenses incurred by the private hospitals on free treatment of patients are being reimbursed to them under the PMJAY scheme."

Dr Sachin Kharat, Health Officer of Haveli Panchayat Samiti said, "We have instructed all the hospitals where beds have been reserved for treating COVID-19 patients to enrol under the MPJAY scheme. We are also taking follow-up with the Zilla Parishad to reimburse the expenses incurred by patients in private hospitals. This reimbursement will be done under the Dr Rakhmabai Raut Financial Assistance Scheme and citizens can benefit from Rs 25 thousand to Rs 1 lakh from it."
