COVID-19 Pune: Mulshi Speciality Hospital sealed for three days by district administration

Pune: Villagers and kin of a deceased patient have alleged that the Mulshi Speciality hospital near Lavale phata in Mulshi taluka, is openly flouting norms laid down by the district administration. Villagers have claimed that the hospital admitted the patient diagnosed with pneumonia in its Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but neither conducted his swab test for COVID-19 nor informed the district health authorities.

A retired government officer was admitted to the hospital on July 10. Doctors diagnosed him with pneumonia and took him to ICU. Despite symptoms, the patients COVID-19 test was not done. On July 15 after the patient's condition deteriorated, his swab samples were sent for testing. However, on July 16 morning the patient succumbed to the disease. Since his COVID-19 report was awaited, the dead body was kept at the hospital from 4 am to 2 pm, while the management asked the relatives to pay the bill amount of Rs 1.20 lakh.

After the family members paid the bill, the hospital management asked them to take custody of the body. Meanwhile, the COVID-test report came positive and the hospital doctors covered the body in plastic sheets and handed it over to the family members. The family members arranged for an ambulance and PPE kits on their own and took the body for funeral at Paud crematorium.

Despite receiving positive reports of a patient, the district administration did not act. The hospital was functioning normally. When Shiv Sena party's District Coordinator Swati Dhamale went to the hospital and questioned the management, the hospital decided to close down, but after a while, they resumed operations.

Finally, Mulshi Taluka Health Officer Dr Ajit Karanjkar instructed to seal the hospital for three days. Even then, the hospital management continued to function and risked the lives of nurses, doctors and other patients visiting the hospital.

Dr Karanjkar said, "We have sealed the hospital for three days and asked the persons who came in close contact with Covid-19 positive patients to remain in quarantine for 14 days. If we receive any written complaint about the hospital flouting norms, we will enquire about it through the Zilla Parishad."
