COVID-19: Pune may witness 1.6 lakh cases at end of August; jumbo hospital soon to be set up in Sangli, Solapur, Satara

The number of coronavirus cases in Pune district might cross the mark of 1.6 lakh at the end of August

Pune: The number of coronavirus cases in Pune district might cross the mark of 1.6 lakh at the end of August as per the estimate of the Maharashtra health department, Divisional Commissioner Saurabh Rao informed on Tuesday. It is also estimated that 62,268 would be the number of active cases.

Rao said, "As per the prediction of the health department Pune district will report over 1.60 lakh cases in the district by the end of this month. Out of which 62,268 will be the active ones.” Rao stated that the current positivity rate in the district is 21 per cent, which has been in control from past few days. "The recovery rate is also improving in the district which currently is at 74.88 per cent. The mortality rate is 2.30 per cent," he informed.

The doubling rate of cases in areas under Pune Municipal Corporation limits (PMC) is 35 days while in Pimpri Chinchwad it is 22 days. Rao further stated that from July 30 till August 10, 825 beds were added to help the patients. Now the plan in coming 10-12 days is to increase 800 more beds. Once the jumbo hospital is ready 1,600 beds will be available.

Meanwhile, Pune district reported 2,044 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday out of which 904 were recorded in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits followed by 783 in Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation area (PCMC). 48 people lost their lives due to the infection on Tuesday. On the positive front, 2,213 patients were discharged on Tuesday taking the tally of recovered patients to 84,645.

Meanwhile, along with Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, regions such as Satara, Solapur and Sangli are witnessing a surge in the spread of COVID-19. Rao said, “Apart from Pune, these districts also have number of COVID-19 cases. The medical team has already done a survey of it. The proposal of making a jumbo hospital in Satara, Sangli and Solapur has already been sent to the state government.”
