COVID-19 Pune: Hospital bed shortage eases as recovered patient count increases in city

Pune: Even though the total number of COVID-19 cases count in the city is increasing, the hospital bed shortage in government and private hospitals has started to ease out as comparatively more number of patients are recovering from the disease every day.

The number of recovered patients is more than the new cases added every day since July 27 up to August 2. Because of this, the active patients count has remained stable around 17500. If the recovered patient count had not increased in the last week, then the active cases count would have reached the 25 thousand mark and then as a result the shortage of hospital beds in the city would have become more acute.

July month saw the highest spike in COVID-19 cases in the city with an average of minimum one thousand new cases reported every day. This resulted in the total number of Covid-19 cases reaching up to 57548. The active patients count also increased in this total tally. Due to this, the ventilator and oxygenated bed availability in hospitals got affected and patients could not get beds in time.

Meanwhile, the recovered patients count also started to increase from July 27.

While 9,466 new cases were reported in the week of July 27 to August 2, the number of recovered patients in this period was 9,524. The number of active cases in this week had reached 19135 which later came down to 17,500 to 18,000. In terms of percentage, the active cases were 39 per cent as compared to the total cases in this week, which later came down to 35 per cent. This helped patients and their relatives to get hospital beds quite easily.

A Pune Municipal Corporation officer said, “After the recent unlocking at the end of 10-day strict lockdown, citizens have started to step out in large numbers which might lead to an increase in total number of cases as well as active cases in the near future.”
