Only five women recite Atharvashirsha at Shrimant Dagadusheth Ganpati this year amid COVID-19 lockdown

Pune: Every year, Shrimant Dagadusheth Halwai Ganapati Temple reverberated with holy chants during the Ganesh Festival but this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the prayers were chanted in the presence of five people. 

Every year, thousands of women gathered there to recite 'Atharvashirsha' prayers.  This initiative has been followed from the last 34 years.

Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Sarvajanik Ganpati Trust, Suvarnayug Tarun Mandal organised Atharvashirsha recitation program on the occasion of Rishi Panchami on. Shital Tanwade, Seema Limaye, Vidya Ambardekar, Hemalatha Dabi, Supriya Saraf and five other women were part of the event. These women have been participating in this initiative for the last 10 years.

Observed as Rishi Panchami, the second day of Ganesh Chaturthi, celebrations at the temple observes the annual recital of prayers for the last 34 years. This year, due to pandemic, the festival was not as grand as usual, which disappointed everyone. However, many women took part online.

The Atharvashirsha recitation started at around 6 in the morning with the playing of conch shells (Shank). The women present in the temple along with Omkar Geet. Aarti of Lord Ganesha was also performed at this time.
