Pune: Apart from the rising number of total cases, the active cases doubling rate has also increased in Pune city which means the active cases are now doubling in just 9.8 days instead of 19 days. The most worrying part is this increase is seen despite the administration conducting the highest number of daily tests for diagnosis of COVID-19 cases in the city.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the city is now 42466, of which 16269 are active cases. The doubling rate for total positive cases now is 14 days. The active cases percentage has increased from 26.2 per cent to 52.7 per cent as compared to last week. This increase is despite the higher testing rate, which should ideally reduce the active cases as the denominator increases. If this coronavirus spread continues with the same rate, then Pune city may soon witness community transmission of the contagion.

The Pune Municipal Corporation had declared a strict lockdown of 10 days from July 14 to 23 in view of the rising COVID-19 cases in the city. Only medical and milk shops were allowed to open for the first five days of the lockdown. This measure was intended to break the chain of virus spread and reduce the total count of the cases. However, despite the stringent lockdown measure, neither the overall number of cases have reduced nor the active cases have come down. The Case Fatality Ratio in Pune city is 2.51 per cent, slightly above the national average of 2.41 per cent.

At present, there are 2063 oxygenated beds, 509 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds and 305 ventilator support beds available across all hospitals in the city. But due to the surge in active COVID-cases, the number of hospital beds is proving inadequate.
