Couple held for abandoning twins near Pashan lake

Pune: A man and a woman were nabbed by Pune city police for allegedly abandoning two one-day-old infants, a boy and a girl, near Pashan Lake on January 14.

Acting on a tip-off received by policemen Prakash Avhad and Sachin Kamble of Chatuhshrungi Police Station, the accused were nabbed from their house in Vadgaon Budruk.

According to the police, after separating from her husband with whom she has three daughters, she was into a relationship with the accused man. They lived together. On January 13 at 4.10 am, she delivered the twins at a nursing home in Karve Nagar. However, without informing the authorities she left with the infants and abandoned them near Pashan Lake.

The police said that while investigating the case, they reached the nursing home and were informed about a man who had brought the woman who delivered twins. However, the address given there was found to be old and the woman did not live there for last one year. With technical analysis of phone records, the police searched Vadgaon Budruk area and nabbed them.

“As the woman already has three daughters, she was not ready to bear financial burden of two more children, hence she and her partner abandoned the infants,” a police officer said.

The man and woman were charged for offence under section 317 of the Indian Penal Code.
