Country sees 17 pc rainfall deficiency

PUNE: The rainfall deficiency across the country till July 25 is 17 per cent, though conditions are favourable for strengthening the monsoon pulse in the country. 

In Maharashtra, the rainfall deficiency is at nine per cent. Konkan and Goa and Central Maharashtra received normal rainfall but in Marathwada and Vidarbha the situation continues to remain grim.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Konkan and Goa regions have a 16 per cent rainfall excess while Central Maharashtra has six per cent rainfall excess. 

Drought-prone regions Marathwada and Vidarbha have a 35 per cent and 42 per cent deficiency, respectively, between June 1 and July 25.

THE CITY SCENARIO
With a short week with the rain last week, Pune still has 50 per cent excess rainfall. Last week, the excess percentage was as high as 73. It has significantly dropped since. 

Between June 1 and July 25, as per IMD, Pune received 628.8 mm rainfall against the normal of 418.4 mm. 

The IMD predicted that the city would experience light rain till July 27, after which light to moderate rains are expected on July 28 and July 29. Rainfall activity is expected to reduce from July 30. 

STATE TO GET GOOD RAINS TILL JULY-END
Anupam Kashyapi, Head of Weather at IMD, Pune, said a low pressure area is very likely to form over coastal areas of West Bengal by July 26, which will cause good rain.

He added that while there is a low pressure area expected to form in the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea side of the monsoon is also expected to strengthen.

“We expect heavy rainfall in Konkan and Goa till July 28. In Central Maharashtra, fairly widespread rainfall is predicted till July 29, along with the ghat areas. In Marathwada, there will be scattered rain till July 28. In Vidarbha, till July 28, the rainfall will be fairly widespread,” said Kashyapi.

- The IMD predicted that the city would experience light rain till July 27, after which light to moderate rains are expected on July 28 and July 29.
