Corporators slam PMC for lethargic work during floods

PUNE: Many corporators criticised the civic administration for the lethargic rescue work in the recent flash flood incidents, in the monthly General Body Meeting on Tuesday.

Corporators of the ruling party i.e. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were in the foreront in blaming the administration for its shoddy work. After criticism, the administration assured corporators on taking anti-encroachment measures to prevent  future calamity in that area.

In September, Katraj, Kondhwa, Sahakar Nagar and Dhanakwadi areas faced flash floods in which 25 people died. The civic administration  had evacuated 3.500 people and shifted them to nearby schools.

After two months, the corporators raised the issue of lethargic work of the administration in the GB meeting.

Corporators pointed out improper rehabilitation and rescue work, unauthorised constructions and encroachments on nalas in Katraj, Sahakar Nagar and Dhankawadi areas. BJP corporators Mahesh Wable,  Rajshri Shilimkar, Rajendra Shilimkar of  flash flood-affected areas blamed the civic administration along with Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Shiv Sena corporators. For more than four hours, the corporators were discussing the flash flood issue in the meeting.

BJP corporator Arati Kondhare said,“The disaster management cell is not working properly and they don’t have manpower. They are only coordinating with all departments and spending money on the awareness programme in the city. Despite early warning of heavy rainfall from IMD officials, the department did not take any constructive steps to tackle the situation.”

BJP corporator Pravin Chorbole pointed out unauthorised constructions on the nalas and held civic administration responsible.

After criticising corporators, Deputy Mayor Siddharth Dhende instructed the administration to submit an action taken report to GB in two days.

PMC’s Additional Municipal Commissioner Rubal Agarwal said, “We provided all necessary aid to flash flood-affected people. Private agency Primemove has conducted a survey and presented a report about encroachments on nalas. We will take action against encroachment as per GB’s directives.”
