Coronavirus Pune: Two-month-old baby dies of COVID-19

Maharashtra is the worst-hit state in the country has reported the maximum number of positive cases and recorded the highest number of deaths which has become a worrying sign for the government. The state has recently crossed the one lakh mark, outnumbering China from where the disease originally started.

On Saturday, a shocking incident came into light as a two-month-old baby boy in Hadapsar died due the deadly coronavirus infection. Out of 358 recent active cases, the child’s death is among the 15 other deaths recorded in Pune district. The case has been counted as one of the youngest fatalities because of the novel COVID-19.

According to health officials, these new cases boosted the death rates to 484 and the total number of coronavirus positive cases has increased to 11,560 in the districts of Pune.

The infant who died at the KEM Hospital, Rasta Peth on June 7 has been a subject of controversy and contention as his death was recorded on Saturday, almost after a week. On June 3, the baby boy was admitted to the general hospital and the doctors tested him positive for the Covid-19 infection the other day. But he suffered from serious respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) which led to a cardiopulmonary arrest because of which he died. A mass was formed in his chest area as he was also suffering from a congenital disorder that blocked his windpipe, making it extremely tough for him to oxygenate and breath.

“We will look into the matter and seek an explanation from the hospital as to why the death was reported so late,” said Dr Ramchandra Hankare, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) health chief.

According to the district health officer, Dr Bhagwan Pawar, 282 new active cases has been reported from the PMC limits, around 39 cases from the PMPC (Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation), around four cases from rural areas and 33 from the cantonment board areas and civil surgeon parts.

However, according to the various research and studies conducted, the fatality rates of infants dying due to COVID-19 is low but these kinds of tragedies are a sign of concern of how exactly the virus can affect babies or little children.
