Coronavirus Pune: PMPML issues stern ‘dismissal’ warnings to employees flouting punctuality

Pune: With people exercising extreme caution while stepping out of homes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many employees of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) refused to join work.

PMPML has decided to dismiss the employees who do not report to work.

According to the officials, PMPML is working under essential services, and a limited number of buses are available for government, police and others who are involved in emergency services. Due to the coronavirus lockdown, many employees are making excuses and taking leaves to avoid working.

“Around 1,000 employees, including drivers, conductors, checkers, controllers and others are working from March 25. Some of the employees are taking leave without any reason, some are reporting late to the office, and some are trying to push the work for the next day. The administration has warned such employees to join office without delay, or they will be dismissed or face suspension based on emergency law,” said PMPML Transport Manager Anant Waghmare.

The PMPML is running almost 120 buses on 50 routes in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. On average, 12,000 passengers use buses daily even during the lockdown. They also generate Rs 1 lakh average income.

Waghmare said, “We are currently running Pushpak Seva which is to transport bodies of those who died due to the coronavirus. The buses are running in both cities. Earlier, the drivers were not coming as they were scared. However, the matter is solved. The employees are working on a rotational basis. We are in emergency service, and those who are called for duty must join.”

PMPML is working under essential services, and a limited number of buses are available for government, police and others. However, there is discontent among the staffers as they have not been covered under the ‘Suraksha Kavach’ scheme. Under the scheme, a person working during the pandemic is insured for Rs 1 crore.
