Coronavirus Pune: PMC warns private hospitals for denying treatment

Pune: Pune Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad has warned private hospitals of strict action if they are found denying treatment to patients. Many citizens have complained about not receiving treatment from private hospitals on time resulting in loss of lives or deteriorating health conditions of coronavirus-infected persons.

The Pune Municipal Corporation has issued notices to private hospitals after receiving several complaints. There is considerable panic amongst citizens about the coronavirus infection and amidst this, many private hospitals are denying admission to such patients. The PMC has 'advised' private hospitals that they should ensure no patient suffers due to non-availability of medicines or treatment.

The PMC has said that private hospitals should immediately admit patients coming to their facilities. Many hospitals asked relatives to shift patients to other hospitals if they were identified to be positive for Covid-19.

Recently, doctors in Poona hospital had refused treatment to two patients. The PMC has already issued notice to this hospital. The hospital authorities have been instructed to file a written response in 24 hours or face strict action by the PMC.

"Hospitals should not deny treatment to COVID or non-COVID patients in such trying times. They should act responsibly and ensure no patient suffers or dies due to non-availability of treatment,” Shekhar Gaikwad said.

Meanwhile, Pune district reported 248 new cases with 11 deaths on Friday. With this, the total cases of COVID-19 in the region are nearing the mark of 9,000.

From the news cases, 184 were found positive in Pune city followed by 53 in Pimpri-Chinchwad and 11 from the rural parts. In a sigh of relief, no new case was reported from civil surgeon and cantonment on Friday.
